This still life, unmentioned in Vincent van Gogh’s letters, has long intrigued scholars regarding its place within his work. While its subject relates to earlier floral compositions, the distinctive blues, ochers, and graphic brushwork firmly connect it to the landscapes Van Gogh painted in Auvers shortly before his death in July 1890.
